During Liberia’s July 2024 Independence celebration, L.I.T.E. (Lifting Individuals Through Education) hosted its annual empowerment program under the theme “Free to Be Loved.” The focus was clear and powerful, to educate women about domestic violence: what it is, how to recognize it, and how to seek help.
Over 100 market women gathered for this transformative session, where they learned that love should never come with fear. Susie Telleh, a senior leader with the Liberian National Police, served as the keynote educator. She guided participants through the realities of domestic abuse and shared vital information about the resources and support systems available to help women live safe, healthy, and hopeful lives.
Beyond education, the day was filled with warmth, dignity, and care. Each woman received a hot meal and a bag of rice, symbolic of nourishment for both body and spirit. More than food, these gifts represented hope, and a reminder that they are seen, valued, and deserving of love without harm.
Through initiatives like Free to Be Loved, L.I.T.E. continues its mission to educate, empower, and elevate women and families in Liberia. By combining awareness, compassion, and tangible support, we are lighting the path to safer communities and stronger futures.
